Teenager from disturbing coming-out video helps raise money for LGBT homeless shelter

gaywrites:

Less than two weeks ago, a disturbing video of a homophobic family beating their gay son went viral. Since then, the teen in the video, Daniel Pierce, has received nearly $100,000 in donations toward new living arrangements from empathetic supporters.

But since then, Pierce has updated the fundraising page and asked people to redirect their generosity. He’s working with Lost N’ Found Youth, an Atlanta homeless shelter for LGBT youth, and is asking people to donate to their work instead of to his personal cause. The shelter is currently fundraising for a huge project to open a new transitional housing facility.

“It’s important for all of you to know that right now, what I need most is time to think and work through the next steps in my life,” wrote Pierce. “I have been working closely with Atlanta-based Lost-n-Found Youth to help figure out what’s next for me. Right now, I’m safe and definitely feel your love all around me. Thank you!”

Since Pierce began directing donations to the organization, which seeks safety and shelter for Atlanta’s LGBTQ youth, the organization has raised more than $21,000, its director tells The Advocate. Lost N’ Found Youth is the only nonprofit dedicated to getting LGBT youth off Atlanta’s streets, and is largely staffed and funded by volunteers. Donations can be made online here

Talk about paying it forward. This human inspires me.

Teen Wolf cast members Tyler Posey, Dylan O’Brien, Tyler Hoechlin, Holland Roden, and more weigh in on the LGBT characters who run with the wolf pack.

In the world of Teen Wolf, homophobia is nonexistent. Among the characters on the show, differences in sexuality are accepted with the same ease as differences in eye color, and a romance between gay characters is depicted in the same manner as its straight counterpart. This gained the show a loyal pack of LGBT fans who have followed the adventures of Beacon Hills High School’s supernatural students over the past four seasons.

We recently sat down with several members of the show’s cast and asked them to weigh in onTeen Wolf’s inclusion of LGBT characters and the positive impact the show’s homophobia-free world is having on young viewers.

Tyler Posey (Scott McCall)
On the fan reaction to Teen Wolf’s inclusion of LGBT characters:

We do it in such a natural way. It’s not forced or over-the-top or anything like that. I think it’s perfect and natural, and I think the kids that watch the show really do respect the way we include gay characters. That’s why Charlie (Carver) and Keahu (Kahuanui) — the characters they play are so popular. We love it and we’re happy to be able to show kids that it’s OK to be who you are.

Tyler Hoechlin (Derek Hale)
On Teen Wolf’s inclusion of LGBT characters:
I love that it’s a freedom that we’ve had with MTV, and (executive producer) Jeff (Davis) has done a great job of keeping that a central part of the show. It’s an important thing that the demographic that’s watching the show is being introduced to that and is able to see it. I think it’s a fantastic thing that we’ve been able to integrate into the show.
